Groove a Solid Putting Stroke ~ Golf Tips

Putting Tips Laneway Trough Drill

On shorter putts, the putter face should remain square to the hole through the stroke. This means that the putter swings straight back and through along the target line and doesn’t rotate or sway in any way. Once the putts begin to get longer however, we do so see some variations in stroke paths. These variations include an arc-like in to in motion and a straight back and through stroke. By using the straight back and through method on short putts you can be sure your putter is on-line to the target throughout the entire stroke, minimizing your risk of missing.

A great little drill to help incorporate this kind of stroke is to create a putting trough or lane to practice from. As shown from the picture, above grab two of your clubs and head out to your practice green. Hit a few putts to a target less than 10 feet away to get a feel for the break. Now set the two clubs down along your intended line (with enough room for your putter to travel through freely) and hit a couple putts focusing on the keeping your clubface square throughout the stroke. Adjust the laneway if needed to ensure success.

This drill is great for grooving a stroke that is consistent, repeatable and straight back and through. You will be unable to swing your putter on an in to in path without hitting the shaft.

Give it a try!
